The 1840 census gives the name of head of household and the number of people living in the home with them listed under certain age ranges. The 1840 census can be quite helpful and with a few other records can help one figure out if you have the correct family and missing children. There is a little hidden record on the second page that shows veterans from the Revolutionary War. It gives their name and age.
